Remember that movie series from back in the 80’s? If you don’t the movies starring Michael J Fox, featured a time traveling automobile which allowed the actors character to move back or forward in time.
What would you do if you could time travel like that? What would you have done differently? What difference would that make now? Fantasy like that can be thought provoking but serves us if only to contemplate what might have been or what could be.
In the investment world, we make decisions in the present. We do consider past history and future prospects in deciding whether to make recommendations for inclusion in portfolios. The point though is to think about the long term. Remember what Apple Inc. was doing back about the time the aforementioned movie was popular? Not at all today like it was then. I Pads, I Pods, I Phones, were not on the radar back then. This is just an example of the value of long term investing and compound returns one can realize over the long pull.
